This special evening will cover both traditional and digital techniques in creating film and color separations for use in fine art screen-printing.

Master Printer Jose Alpuche will go through the necessary steps to creating film separations using traditional techniques. Artist Joel Garcia will walk participants through the steps of using digital technology for film prep and separations.

After both presentations a dialogue will follow to discuss the pros & cons of both approaches as well as go through various techniques of combing both digital and traditional forms.

Participants are expected to bring artwork. Your artwork will be used to discuss the different approaches one can take to achieving the desired results.

Attendance Fee: $20

Please bring your own brushes.
SHG will provide India Ink and Acetate.

Thank you for believing in Self Help Graphics & Art. It’s because of your support and involvement that we continue to advance Latino culture through the arts. I am writing today to ask for your continued support.

It’s been an incredible year! After nearly 40 years, we moved to a new home in Boyle Heights, where a continued tradition of sharing culture and experience through art is finding new breath within a local renaissance. Our new 1st Street home is literally the first stop on the Metro Gold Line, providing even greater access to our comunidad. Self Help Graphics’ new home brings infinite opportunities for more partnerships and more arts-related activities in a city where budget cuts have decimated arts projects and arts in schools. At a time of great uncertainty in our nation, the need for creative expression – especially among our Latino youth – is more important than ever before.

Since our move, we have seen an overwhelming increase in requests for our services. This past year, Self Help Graphics served more than 10,000 people through a mix of programming for people of all ages, including professional artists, youth and families, and hosted special events such as our 38th Annual Día de los Muertos celebration – all of which we provide at little or no cost. Imagine what more we could do with your support.

Self Help Graphics cannot solely rely on funding from foundations, corporations or government in this economic climate—we need you. Help us to continue our critical role as a conduit of creativity for our community. This is a 30-week program for teenagers (ages 15 to 18).Students learn computer design applications, printmaking, T-shirt design,screen-printing and digital video production. The program culminates with anexhibition of the work at Self-Help Graphics & Art, at the CaliforniaInstitute of the Arts, as well as with a screening at REDCAT.

CAP Instructors: CalArts School of Theater alumnus ReggieColeman and CalArts student instructors

AllCAP After-School programs are free. No previous experience is required andregistration is open to students ages 13 to 19, with the exception of the mediaarts programs for middle school students (ages 10 to 14). Please register onthe first day of class. Parent’s/Guardian’s signature will be required on theparticipant’s registration form, standard release form, and medical releaseform. The communities of Boyle Heights and Little Tokyo continue the connections between Mexican Americans and Japanese Americans with the screenings of Stand Up for Justice and Maceo: Demon Drummer.

After the film, members of the community will answer questions and share plans for future screenings and teacher workshops.

Nikkei for Civil Rights & Redress (NCRR) and Visual Communications present, Stand Up for Justice, a 30-minute film based on the true story of a 16-year-old, Mexican-Irish American high school student from Belmont High School who joined his Japanese American friends at Manzanar during World War II. Ralph Lazo voluntarily lived at Manzanar as the only non-Japanese (non-spouse), was drafted from the camp, and in later years continued to support his Japanese American friends in the fight for redress and reparations.

Maceo: Demon Drummer is an East Los Angeles native who began playing Japanese taiko drums with the Sozenji Buddhist Temple in Los Angeles, eventually playing with the world famous Ondekoza taiko troupe. This video also by John Esaki records Maceo's intriguing cross-cultural adventure and how it helped him overcome a devastating leg amputation.

Self Help Graphics & Art was the first organization in the country to create a free public celebration of Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead through the leadership and initiation of local artists in 1973. As in the different Mexican regions, Self Help Graphics’ celebration is distinct to the East Side artistic community it represents. Every year, on November 2nd, Self Help Graphics’ yearly day of remembering that life is a dream from which, one day we will awaken, celebrates our beloved who are no longer with us. Every year we paint our faces in duality -- half calaca and half ourselves, revealing the ancient comedy of life as our ancestors have taught us.

Patssi Valdez is a Los Angeles based artist who grew up in East Los Angeles. She received her BFA from Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. Valdez's art has been featured at the Alma Awards and the Latin Grammies. She is the recipient of many prestigious awards, including from the J. Paul Getty Trust Fund for the Visual Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, and the Brody Arts Fellowship in Visual Arts. Her art work is in several major collections, including the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C.; The Tucson Museum of Art, Arizona; The San Jose Museum of Art, California; and the El Paso Museum of Art, Texas. Valdez is best known for her colorful paintings and early performance work with the avant-garde art group ASCO (Spanish for nausea), which will be featured in a major retrospective this year at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She states “My paintings portray an actual and or imagined place that depict an inspirational or emotionally charged feeling or experience. They are snippets of environments that I consider meaningful and symbolic of my individual as well as collective Chicano experience.” Patssi presently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.

Lead by premier altar-maker and community resident, Ofelia Esparza, participants are invited to place their newly created offerings or those brought from home together in creating a community altar for display throughout our Dia de los Muertos festivities. This inspirational and important art of traditional altar making serves as a way for the community to contribute their memories with special tokens of remembrance. Poetry readings, Pan de Muerto and Xocolatl will also be a part of this special evening.

Self Help Graphics Seeks Qualified Undergraduate Student for Paid Summer Internship through the Getty Multicultural Undergraduate Internship Program.

Self Help Graphics & Art is seeking qualified undergraduate students for its Documentation and Archive Internship position, which will assist in the development and organization of Self Help Graphics & Art's (SHG) print inventory from 2009-2011, as well as associated inventory and materials. The goal of the Documentation and Archive Internship will be to provide SHG with a primary electronic database for its current electronic and online initiatives.

Self Help Graphics & Art is a nationally recognized center for Latino arts that develops and nurtures artists in printmaking. SHG seeks to advance Latino art broadly through programming, exhibitions and outreach to diverse audiences in East Los Angeles and beyond. SHG seeks to identify and engage young and emerging artists from the community in all aspects of its activities.

Duration of Internship

The internships are full-time (40 hours/week) positions, each with a salary of $3,500, for a consecutive ten-week work period between June 6 and August 12, 2011.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of Microsoft office, Adobe and Photoshop
• Strong research and writing skills; ability to work independently
• Strong interpersonal communication skills
• Must be organized and detailed oriented
• Able to lift up to 25 lbs

Eligibility

Students must:
• Be of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, or Pacific Islander descent;
• Be currently enrolled undergraduates. Students must have completed at least one semester of college by June 2011, and those who will complete their degree by September 1, 2011 are also eligible to apply; (Students who are enrolled in a second BA or BS program are not eligible.)
• Reside or attend college in Los Angeles County; and
• Be a United States citizen or permanent resident.

Please note that students who have previously served as a Getty multicultural summer intern at SHG or who have served as such at more than two other organizations are not eligible for consideration. SHG staff members and relatives of staff or board members are not eligible for these internships.

Candidates from all areas of undergraduate study will be considered and are not required to have demonstrated a previous commitment to the visual arts.

Description of Documentation and Archive Intern

The Documentation and Archive Intern will assist in the development and organization of Self Help Graphics & Art's (SHG) print inventory from 2009-2011, as well as associated Inventory and materials. Duties will include:

-organizing prints in SHG's archive room and conducting print inventory in SHG's print sale room
-transferring information from each print's Certificate of Authenticity into a master database, and
-documenting each work via digital photography (working with professional or student photographers)
-creating summary/marketing documents for print ateliers, special projects, and current partnerships

The goal of the Documentation and Archive Internship will be to provide SHG with a primary electronic database for its ongoing electronic and online initiatives. SHG's strategic plan, adopted by its Board of Directors in 2008, focuses on organizational and programming growth through the public's accessibility of our collection online as well as the broadening of our collector market via specialty art sale websites. The Documentation and Archive Intern's work will directly be impacting these broader organizational goals and objective. SHG's initiatives include:

-Designing a primary art database with information regarding art work, artist, and collectors (internal systems)
-redesigning and implementing a shopping cart on SHG's website (accessibility)
-establishing presence and inventory on specialty art sale sites such as etsy.com, ebay.com, and artnet.com (earned income initatives)

The Documentation and Archive Intern will work directly with SHG's Executive Director.

SELF HELP GRAPHICS & ART TO MOVE TO A NEW LOCATION LOS ANGELES, Feb 24, 2011 - Spirited by the goal of ensuring a long-term healthy future, Self Help Graphics & Art, one of the nation's leading Latino visual art organizations, will move to 1300 East 1st Street in Boyle Heights. After carefully considering many options and a commitment to serve the Eastside, Self Help found an ideal location in Boyle Heights to continue to advance Latino culture through art for another 40 years.

Three years ago, Self Help Graphics & Art's space was sold to a private developer by the Catholic Archdiocese. The high cost of rent at 3802 Cesar Chavez in addition to a reduction in the use of space created the need for Self Help to search for a new location. The search also included the serious exploration of purchasing the 3802 Cesar Chavez Avenue building. The move to the new location at 1300 1st Street comes with a substantial decrease in monthly rent.

"The opportunity to be a vital part of a new arts district, combined with our need to ensure a fiscally sound future for the organization, compelled us to make the decision to move," said Stephen Saiz, president of the board of directors for Self Help Graphics & Art. "Self Help is grateful for the opportunity to partner with the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency and the City of Los Angeles to serve thousands of artists, youth, families, and community with quality arts programming."

The Boyle Heights community is undergoing an exciting resurgence. Revitalization of the area has accelerated with the Metro Rail Gold Line, the new LAPD Hollenbeck Station, the new Pueblo del Sol Community Center and the Boyle Heights Constituent Service Area to name a few major developments.

"I am thrilled that Self Help Graphics is making its new home in Boyle Heights," said Councilmember Jose Huizar. "Their reputation as one of the nation's premier art centers bodes well for this community and the burgeoning Boyle Heights Arts District. Working with Metro, I am bringing $11 million in streetscape improvements along First Street to support the Arts District, so the timing for Self Help Graphics could not be better. No doubt, they will be a major contributor to the arts movement currently underway in Boyle Heights."

A long-term city vision for the Boyle Heights community, a new arts district will run along a 1.5 mile stretch of 1st Street between Mission Road and Soto Street. As one of the longest running Latino art centers in Los Angeles, it is fitting that Self Help is one of the first stops over the First Street Bridge connecting the vibrant downtown art scene with the historic cultural art community in Boyle Heights.

"The Chicano Movement inspired a cultural renaissance that embraced the social justice issues of its time and communicated community pride through innovative artistic expressions," said Evonne Gallardo, Executive Director, Self Help Graphics & Art. "It seems fitting that Self Help is a part of a new wave of positive and creative neighborhood revitalization--we look forward to experiencing the ideas and art that our community will make together."

Sister Karen Boccalero founded Self Help in collaboration with a group of artists out of a garage, later taking art to the streets through the Barrio Mobile Art Studio, moving into an office in Boyle Heights before moving to Cesar Chavez and Gage through an arrangement with the Sisters of St. Francis and the Catholic Archdiocese. Years of free rent ended when the building was sold to private investors.

The iconic mosaic-tiled building at 3802 Cesar Chavez is an important part of local history. Before serving as Self Help's long-term home the facility was a Catholic Youth Organization in the 1940s as well as home of The Vex, the flashpoint of the growing Chicano punk scene in the 1980s. Self Help has supported the Los Angeles Conservancy's efforts to nominate the building for inclusion in the California Register of Historic Resources.

"Self Help Graphics & Art is a movement not a building," Gallardo said. "While we love and respect the heritage of the Cesar Chavez building, our move is inspired by a legacy of resiliency and independence that started with Sister Karen."

Incorporated in 1973, SHG is the leading non-profit visual arts center serving the predominantly Latino community of Los Angeles. SHG's mission is to develop and nurture Latino artists in printmaking. SHG seeks to advance Latino art broadly through programming, exhibitions and outreach to diverse audiences in East Los Angeles and beyond. SHG seeks to identify and engage young and emerging artists from the community in all aspects of its activities. Self Help showcases the talent of local artists through its annual Print Fair a widely renowned opportunity to view, support and purchase fine art from emerging and veteran artists. The organization is also known for its iconic Dia de los Muertos celebration, which draws thousands of attendees. Self Help has participated in the City of Los Angeles' Summer Night Lights gang reduction program which has been hailed as contributing to a decline in youth crime.

Self Help will officially move to the new space effective April 2, 2011 and plans to hold a series of community open houses.

Artist Erik Ries and Self Help Graphics worked together to create a fine art limited edition commemorative print for the 7th Annual Roots Jam Session Pre Gammy Party. Self Help Graphics & Art also worked with Vyal One to offer live aerosol art for the star-studded event. Chaka Khan, Ne-Yo, and Sara Bareilles, were among the many notable artists who took the stage on Saturday at the hip-hop collective's annual bash.

This notion aims at memorializing the dead through the memory of them living with resistance and pride.

About Slanguage Studio: Founded in 2002 by Karla Diaz and Mario Ybarra, Jr., Slanguage is an artist group headquartered in Wilmington, CA. Slanguage includes teenagers, street artists, and established mid to late career artists, the majority of whom live and work in the greater Los Angeles area. Slanguage bases their practice on a three pronged approach to art making to include education, community-building and interactive exhibitions. The selection of art includes, Esperanza, (1990), a large, marvelous and impeccable print by the late, multi-faceted artist Eduardo Oropeza. Self Help Graphics and Art's Annual Print Fair is a highly anticipated one-day only opportunity for collectors and art lovers to acquire new, limited edition, fine art prints featured in SHG's Print Fair Exhibition. The Annual Print Fair includes outstanding selection of new works created by artists at SHG between 2009 and 2010, including one of a kind monoprints, etchings, woodblock prints, and linocuts. Special commissioned monoprints by Yolanda Gonzalez will be available.
